Joint publication on a correlative tomographic workflow

We recently published the manuscript titled „3D analysis of equally X-ray attenuating mineralogical phases utilizing a correlative tomographic workflow across multiple length scales“ in the journal Powder Technology demonstrating an interdisciplinary collaboration between the IMN/CENEM and the groups of Prof. U. A. Peuker (TU Freiberg), Prof. V. Schmidt (Ulm University) and Prof. A. P. Weber (TU Clausthal). Therein, Silvan Englisch and co-workers apply a correlative and scale-bridging 3D microscopy workflow to a mineral mixture with particles of similar density and size. Through correlative Micro-CT, Nano-CT and SEM-EDXS, the trade-off between sample size and available resolution is overcome by combining the information gathered from different microscopy techniques working at different length scales. Starting from the highly resolved information towards larger sample sizes with different but correlative segmentation workflows based on machine- and deep-learning algorithms yields a mineral- and particle-specific 3D analysis. Important quantitative measures like the mineral liberation degree are extracted, which is of high relevance for advanced separation processes of mined minerals and usually only available on an averaging basis of large quantities. Although this correlative microscopy approach was demonstrated for one exemplary mineral particle system, it can be transferred to any particle system or powder exhibiting primary particle sizes between 0.3 µm to 15 µm.
