Physics Underlying Life Sciences
Research Focus
The research of our group strives to identify when and how soft matters for the living. Our ultimate goal is to provide the same depth of understanding of biological processes as we have in physics. Therefore, we adapt and develop concepts and approaches of theoretical physics and combine these with a variety of simulation techniques and experiments performed by us or by our collaborators. In this way, we address a range of problems arising in soft matter, statistical physics and biophysics. Our aim in dealing with each problem is to systematically address the problem of choice on all relevant scales, from the level of chemical reactions, to the macroscopic behaviour of cells and tissues. We hope that this quantitative approach will make an impact on biology, as well as contribute towards the design of advanced materials and processes.
